  Potential Cholesterol Particle Size Interventions

Published research has established these methods of converting small LDL particles into larger particles.

  • Nicotinic acid or niacin favorably affects all lipids and/or lipoproteins.  Nicotinamide, which is sometimes confused with niacin or nicotinic acid, does not provide the potential health benefit.

  • DHA (docosahexaenoic acid)  or a combination of DHA and EHA () supplements have been shown to increase the size of LDL particles.

  • The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition (AJCN) found that intake of whole-grains, and in particular high-fiber oats, favorably affect risk factors for cardiovascular disease.  Some scientific studies have shown oat fiber to increase the size of LDL particles.

  • Trans Fatty Acids must be eliminated from the diet.  Consumption of dietary trans fatty acids (FAs) is associated with reducing the size of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol particles there by reducing longevity.
